Hi

Finally someone made the long requested app for WD TV Live

Before I by it - I would like to know whether or not the following scenarie would work:

I have an Ipod Touch connected to WIFI -

I have a WD TV Live hardware connected to the same WIFI

I have all my music and movies on a USB harddrive connected directly to the WD TV Live.

So no NAS involved - and the question is - will the app still work as a remote regarding the content on the USB harddrive, in this "No NAS" configuration

If it does - Not only will I buy the app - It will become a true Sonos/Squezzebox killer app, since the electrical cost will be a lot less that on the NAS configuration.

Looking forward to hear from you :-)

Asger :)

Unfortunately at this stage it's impossible to browse the storage directly attached to the WD TV Live.
The reason for that, is that this storage cannot be "seen" outside of WD TV Live by means of UPnP (the protocol which our program utilizes, and the only known way to control the stock WD TV Live).
Perhaps in some (probably distant) future, using a custom made firmware this will be possible.
So, unless you're interested in SHOUTcast radio (which was number one motive for me writing the application, anyway), the application won't do you any good

I too have my USB drive attached to the WDTVLive.
This allows me to share its files with the whole house.

I have noticed that I can see the content of my WDTVLive through iTunes
on my laptop. Perhaps this is a way to see and select.

You might be able to figure out a way to do it without streaming to the
iPhone and back to the WDTVLive. What kind of commands can you send
to the device remotely?

Dear Stephen,

WD TV Live supports the Bonjour protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_%28software%29). If you look at the processes running on the device you can see:

Code:
 5749 root     12224 S    /bin/mDNSResponder -f /tmp/mDNSResponder.conf

Which is the Bonjour daemon. I will look at the option to connect the the device via Bonjour and post my findings. If it is indeed possible - I will surely implement it!!! Thanks for the feedback. Just to make sure - are you using the stock or the customer firmware?

Thanks for the feedback,

Ariel

I tried Bonjour, to see if it really works:
Code:
/Users/roman% dns-sd -B _daap._tcp
Browsing for _daap._tcp
Timestamp     A/R Flags if Domain                    Service Type              Instance Name
21:04:08.168  Add     2  6 local.                    _daap._tcp.               WDTVLIVE

I then logged into device's mt-daapd management interface and pressed the "Start Scan", and then the songs appeared. However, the location of songs is not known, and videos are not shown.
But the good part is that I found out that WD TV Live can share media by SMB protocol. This is even better.
We'll look into it, and perhaps it'll be possible to play attached media after all.

Stay tuned!

Hey, your welcome.

BTW: Yes, I am running stock code and update from WD when they appear.

Stephen,

Just an update on our side - we are now working on a version that supports browsing and playing from the local storage. It was indeed proven feasible. Stay tuned.

I implemented most of it, but then found out, that the name of the share is not always (hell, usually not) the same as the local path. I then reverted my changes, because we wanted to ship the Youtube feature.

This is very disappointing and the only reason why I bought this App: to listen to music attached to the WDTV via a USB-HDD without having to turn on the TV. None of this is clear from the App description, the device is supposed to be a remote for the WDTV Live and if it can't see an attached USB then it is close to useless. I suggest the creators of this App make it absolutely clear on the App site of this limitation to avoid other people wasting their money.
